Description

The 5-Band-EQ project is a compact 5-Band EQ which allows to control 5 frequency bands. The capacitors included in the kit allow to dial 100Hz, 300Hz, 1kHz, 3kHz and 10kHz. The build document is showing how to calculate other frequency bands.

The 5-Band EQ can be cascaded to build a 10-Band or even 15-Band EQ easily.

This kit is a creation by TH Custom Effects in cooperation with Musikding.de. If you have any problem with the content of the kits like mising or wrong parts, please contact Musikding (Klaus) at kontakt@musikding.de. For any technical problem relating to building this project, please contact Thomas at diy.thcustom.com.

Here´s the parts list: Parts List (BOM)

This kit contains all parts you need to build a fully functional effect pedal. Not included in the kit, but also good to have:

  • Aluminium enclosure: select one from top
  • 9V DC power supply
  • 5 nice knobs for the potentiometer, up to 15mm diameter and for 6.3mm shafts
  • Decal, transfer or transparent sheets for labeling

4 from 5 EQ efficace

EQ effective, relatively easy mounting (requires knowledge of the marking of capacitors). installation is easier if you buy a daughterboard for the 3PDT switch, with the trimpot and resistance to the LED. on the site I did not find any, but the designer (TH Custom )made that

4 from 5 Easy build good EQ pedal

Order and shipping process excellent. The build was easy enough, and Ive ended up with a decent EQ pedal. TIP: If you want to experiment with different combinations of capacitors to target different frequency bands, you should order some extra single pin inline sockets to temporarily fit your capacitors into - before you make your definitive choice. I did not do this, and find the circuit board too small and fiddly to change out parts now.

4 from 5 Great equaliser!

Excellent kit and quite easy to build. Only improvement would be to include a 3pdt board for the footswitch. I had a spare and wired that up. Great value kit though.

5 from 5 Nice flexible EQ pedal.

Just finished the build with no problems, very straightforward.

Im going to experiment with the values of components to tailor the actual EQ bands themselves as the values supplied dont hit the frequencies im looking for.

Aside from that its great pedal and having that extra flexibility to customise is a godsend.
Ive found these Musikding kits fantastic for getting me into pedal building and will be purchasing more as the months pass.I can see how addictive it becomes! Recommended.

4 from 5 Good kit

Never made an effects board before, some physical contention with parts but worked out in the end.

3 from 5 Effective but could be improved

I built this pedal to have an EQ so I can tweak and shape the sound for various purposes.

For this purpose, the pedal works great. It also fits a 1590B, although you need to be precise with the pot holes drilling.

BUT:

1) I think the stock frequencies (which come from the EQ chip documentation) dont suit guitar very well. Instead I ordered capacitors for the following settings:

- F1: C0 = 1 uF, C = 22 nF (gives f = 120 Hz, Q = 1,1)
- F2: C0 = 0,33 uF, C = 8,2 nF (gives f = 340 Hz, Q = 1,2)
- F3: C0 = 0,15 uF, C = 3,3 nF (gives f = 790 Hz, Q = 1,1)
- F4: C0 = 47 nF, C = 1,5 nF (gives f = 2100 Hz, Q = 1,3)
- F5: C0 = 27 nF, C = 390 pF (gives f = 5430 Hz, Q = 0,9)

This way we have more appropriate bass, lo mids, mids, hi mids and treble controls suitable for guitar. (I actually labelled my pots this way.)

3) The Musikding BOM has an error: the kit comes with two 6.8k resistors (which is correct as per the TH Custom docs), not 68k. This led me to believe that 68k was really necessary so I soldered these initially. The sound was not at all as expected. Placing pots at 12 oclock would not give a flat EQ at all. After I switched resistors, it was the case -- fortunately! So, be sure to use the 6.8k resistors that come with the kit.

4) Including a 3PDT wiring board with the kit would make wiring of the 3PDT, R_led and LED much easier.

5) I think this would be better with a volume pot added to the PCB (this is more of a suggestion for TH Custom). I initially thought of adding one myself between the board OUT and the 3PDT, but couldnt find an esthetic placement for it while keeping the W pot layout. A 2x3 pot layout would be nice, but currently would require wiring pots to the PCB instead of using the handy PCB mounts.

So in the stock version Id give this a 3-star rating. Quite happy with the resulting pedal with improved C values though!
