Description

The Headstone Drive is a MOSFET/CMOS based clean boost, overdrive and powerful (semi) parametric EQ all in one.

This kit contains the PCB and all necessary parts. The enclosure can be selected, please select 4 knobs up to 22mm diameter, for 6,3mm shaft separately.

This project is by Lectric-fx, in cooperation with Musikding. If you have any problems with the contents of the kit, please contact Das Musikding (Klaus). Since this project is rather complex, it is more for the experienced builder. For technical problems here is the link to the support-forum: Lectric-fx Support.

5 from 5 Josh Homme was here

This is a parametric eq with boost and clipping diodes (overdrive mode), similar to the old maestro with the new features from the PDF.
In my version a 22n cap wasnt in the list of component (take one more to be safe).
The enclosure is really small and different from the others BB, I prefer the others BBs.
The sound: It could be a fixed wha, a boost or an overdrive... really stoner low gain stuff (or higain if you use it to boost an amp)

3 from 5 Versatile parametric EQ! But unusable dirty channel and unbalanced volume control

Easy to solder although there is a fair amount of components. The specialized footswitch PCBs from Lectric FX help with a cleaner build.

The shipping time was longer than usual (about 3 weeks). Besides, there was a mistake in the kit, I received 2 copies of the 9-pad footswitch PCB instead of one 9-pad and one 6-pad. Klaus sent the missing one to me right away but this delayed things by an extra week.

The EQ part of this pedal with the FREQ / HEIGHT / BANDWIDTH controls is excellent, no doubt about it. The frequency sweep covers the whole spectrum. The height allows for either cut or boost (although most of its action happens at the extremes because of the linear taper -- I couldnt source an S-taper (aka W-taper) pot). The 4 bandwidth positions work as expected.

Unfortunately I found the Dirty channel to be fairly unusable. This seems to be the case in StoneDeafs own PDF-2, too (also inspired by Maestro MPF). The circuit uses a single soft clipping stage without any tweaking controls so the result is a one-trick pony sound thats too raw and lo-fi for my taste and lacks definition at higher playing speeds.

I also found that the volume control configured by the internal trimmers wasnt well balanced. Unit gain was at about 3-4 oclock with trimmers set to max. This means its more of a volume attenuation control than a proper cut/boost master volume.

Overall, given the PCB size (this requires a 1590BB) and the price, I think youd be better off with a dedicated single-band parametric EQ (such as a clone of JHS Daunting Mids) fit in a 125B enclosure. Then just chain it with a proper drive pedal of choice (tube screamer, rat, etc).
