Description

The Empyrean Deluxe Distortion is a dual-mode bass distortion that delivers modern rock and metal bass tones by way of carefully-tuned signal filtering, plus a clean blend to retain the low end. Also includes a 3-band EQ for more flexible control of the blended tone.

This kit contains the PCB and all necessary parts. The enclosure can be selected, please select 7 knobs, up to 20mm diameter, for 6,3mm shaft separately.

5 from 5 Bass dual distortion with some similarities with the BK3, but with its own flavor and singularities.

The circuits creates 2 distortion paths. We can pan between a channel with more tone shaping, giving a more tight and refined sound, and another channel with less tone shaping and filters, giving a more open, raw and wild distortion sound.
It is like running two distortion circuits in parallel through a mixer with a blend control, and thats the most interesting feature in this circuit. Both distortions sound significantly different from each other, and the combinations dialed with the MOD control are very pleasing and interesting, with all kinds of nuances.

The EQ controls and frequency boost toggles are all effective with good range of action.

Despite the design similarities, its not possible to emulate a BK3 with this circuit, in my experience.
The BK3 with mid boost and grunt switched on creates some sort of mid curve and some kind of cab-sim or amp-sim flavor that the Empyrean cant do, in my experience.

However, the tight channel (MOD fully CCW) does have some similarities with the BK3 in terms of gain texture and tone shaping. Its less colored and more transparent than a BK3, which makes it probably easier to blend with the raw distortion channel.
The empyreans bass boost and high boost switches are acting in a different way than the BK3 switches. Hi-boost is very effective to add some precision and clarity when we engage the bass boost, which pushes an overdriven signal into distortion.

First time i tried it, i thought it could be interesting to try and add some diode clipping only on the raw distortion channel, in order to make it a bit smoother around the edges.
You can find more about it here :

Great kit, straightforward build, all my thanks to Aion and Musikding !
