Description

The Engineer´s Thumb Compressor is designed by Merlin Blencowe (The Valve Wizard Website.

It features controls for Attack, Ratio, Threshold, Release and Level and works with a LM13700 IC, functional equal to the CA3080, which is also used in the Dynacomp.

This kit contains all parts you need to build a fully functional effect pedal.

Not included in the kit, but also very good to have:

Aluminium enclosure: select one above
DC power supply
5 nice knobs for the pots, for 6,3mm shaft
Decal, transfer or transparent sheets for labeling

Fantastic Compressor

The best compressor Ive tried for electric guitar - smooth, silky compression that can be dialled up to high ratios with low noise. I installed a 300k lin pot for the release value resistor. At low settings it will distort in a very pleasureable way. I use this compressor for guitars, drum machines, basses etc and Im extremely happy about how it performs and sounds. Highly recommended!

Simple and really efficient

Really simple to build after a little experience on soldering; sounds great even for bass guitar, the sustain is unreal. The 5 knob really set it apart from all the other compressor in this price range. It would be interesting to use/design a gate because of the inevitable noise (of my instrument) that brings up.

Brilliant Compressor - Quality components.

I ordered the Engineers Thumb with enclosure. Super easy to build, only took me 2 hours. Worked first time. The compressor itself is super quiet and works great with both guitar and bass. Definitely recommend it. Dont forgot to order knobs... I forgot. Only reason Im not giving it a 5 star rating is because it took ages to get to me here in Australia. Otherwise perfect.

One little flaw

First of all I agree with all the 5 stars review, this is a great comp overall and a fantastic one for its price.
I am making this post only because I hope to help others that might have the same problem I had: my kit came with a BC337 transistor (NPN), while the right one is the BC327 (PNP). With the 337 on the pedal did not compress and produced unwanted noise. So if any user in the future should have the same issue, check if the transistor you got was the right one.
