5 from 5 Great sounding Guitar Amp

Ive been building PCB & Breadboard based FX boxes for a while now, and fancied a bit more of a challenge. The instructions were comprehensive, and it just took a couple of days to complete. Though everything worked perfectly first time, I had to check some voltage anomalies via the Forum, and received a swift & helpful response (revealing my measurement error & not a build fault...).
I housed the Amp in a spare combo with a Super 8 Speaker, & was surprised by how quiet the Amp is when operating, how loud it is for the Wattage, and what a great tone & sustain you can achieve with the settings.
The Gain control adds mild Crunch rather than Overdrive, but the warmth of the Valve Compression is Superb, and can add enhancement to any Overdrive or Distortion Pedals used. In summary, this is an outstanding little Amp, a very rewarding project, and would recommend you check it out...

5 from 5 Clean and plenty loud

Always wanted to build a tube amp so I built this kit just for giggles.
The kit is good value and the documentation is excellent.

With some soldering experience and care it is an easy build.
All the parts were there, although the wire lengths seemed not sufficient at first ( it was enough, but dont waste too much).

3W is plenty loud for a bedroom amp, but this is neither a Mad Amp nor a blues amp.
It is very clean with some dirt when you turn the gain up, not like a Fender Champ.
It does work nicely with my telecaster and takes pedals very well.

A fun project and a very useable practice amp.

5 from 5 Final thoughts and attention points

First of all, this is a great (little?) tube amp. The set was well packed and complete; The schematics are very well documented.
This was my first built, so I asked some questions on the forum and had helpful responses very fast.
After the built, I checked/measured and this were my pitfalls (my mistakes):
1) I switched 2 resistors, the 300 and the 300k,
2) I didnt remove enough lacquer from the power leads, so I had a bad contact
3) Some soldering points needed more solder (were loose).
So, these were my mistakes I want to share, I hope this helps other builders.
Certainly worth 5 stars.

5 from 5 Very nice sounding little amp

An aquaintance notified me about MD by showing his MadAmp Rock-G3. After a while I chose for and purchased the Blues-version. Actually, this is my second build. In the process of the first one, I had to overcome some challenges I discussed with Klaus and Martin. Notwithstanding that I was alert on all pitfalls, I created a few new ones ;-). However, my little mistakes were tackled in time. Before the big moment of plugging in some ax ;-), of course I thoroughly cheked if everything was constructed and connected well. All measurements were within an acceptable 10% range. So, let us make some music! This tiny little amp sounds very convincing, especially in the [Clean]-Departement. Thats why its called the Blues-version. Educated as a classical trained guitarist I still prefer the pure vibes of tone-wood to demonstrate every nuance and feel that most distorted sounds might cover or hide. With a bit of Reverb and Delay an excellent sound with that typical silky, glassy but still warm tube-sound.

Having said that, because of the high energy prices I honestly tend to use my Rebel amp (also MD) from time to time which sounds also surprisingly good, given the low price. And it functions well even with a 9 Volts-adapter. Just a sidestep here ;-).

By the way, there is one minor point to be mentioned. This time the three large ELCOs do have a longer and smaller shape (almost leveling the edge of the enclosure). Undoubtfully caused by short supplies and another supplier, etc. However, the available ELCOs also feel less stable when working in that area. Thats a minor point, this time. Nevertheless, a nice amp.
And also an intensive, difficult but rewarding construction process, one of the main reasons to build my second G3-Blues.

5 from 5 Hmm... I like it.

Im not american. That means there will be no greater than great words, no description of outer world experiences and absolutely no excuses for starting new religions.

...actually Martins design made me sad. Sad, because i find lack of innovation in music business so unbearable. If you want something different, something new, you dont get it by spending huge amounts of money for getting something from companies been in business for 70ish years. What you get by doing that is clone of a dinosaur, but made of cheaper parts. Big old names have been milking their dead cows for decades.

If you want something completely different, you have to build (very cheap) kit by yourself.

Kit really comes with all parts but chassis to build one working amp. Although this can be build by a clever first timer, i suggest that people learn their soldering and wiring with pedal kits before starting with an amp. Building instructions are quite clear, but sometimes few more definitive words/pics couldve helped.

When it comes to parts, i lack name and education to say anything internet-approvable on those. But everything seems good enough to make a lasting amplifier. Certainly better stuff than in too many bigger-name-brands product. Didnt notice anything weak-looking. Im quite confident that if my solders last, the amp itself lasts decades.

However the heater powering wire was a nightmare. What was that black yuck in those?!? Had to sand the wires clean before tin attached. But since this was only issue i had, there will be no recounting with given 5 stars. You, the next builder, sand them too (and swear, sand again, swear again until they finally have no trace of that sticky goo and your solders look nice and clean).

Amp itself is nice (see the disclaimer this message starts with). Dont let the price, size and specs fool you. Its not a toy. More like fine tool for those who know what theyre doing.

Whole new kind of co-operation with gain and volume gives you tools to change sound some, but more in changing the touch you get with your guitar. G3 is normal guitar amp with gain 0 and volume open. Not silent, as one could think. Gain adds to the sound. More like tube compressor than common pre amp stages which reduce gain but without feel of flattening (your compressor may of course be different, so...). Admitting this is a matter of taste, i dare to claim that gain knob makes changes that with most (havent played them all, so cant be sure) amps on this planet youd have to change to completely different amp.

And while there of course cant be large volume headroom like in 100W Bogner Ecstacy, the amp uses all of its watts well. There is logic of larger amp in G3s headroom but with smaller volume of course. Dont let the small power rating fool you. Although youre not going to win the decibel war with it, you get in trouble if you open it all the way in apartment building.

...at least you have to be very, very good guitarist to be able to slip away of waking your neighbours up in middle of the night. I wish (for your neighbours) you are.

G3 can also take every pedal i have. I started my testing with blues breaker-styled one and moved , via a Rat-clone to a 2 stage boosted hi gain (Randall amp in the box, i believe). The more gain in pedal, the less gain in amp keeps it clear. With right settings it takes e-ve-ry-thing. Even that clearly failed Klon-clone of mine, which for some reason gives ridiculous amounts of more gain.

Im not going to claim i know the best speaker for it. I use 2 x 12 cabinets. One closed back with V30s and other Dumble(ish) semi-open with Greenbacks. I wish i had one Cannabis Rex in here. Just a hunch. But those are matter of taste. The amp has a variety of sounds available, so trying to name a speaker for it is useless.

Building is itself fun and id buy these for the fun of that. But when you get something like this after finishing, THAT is something you donr expect in this price. Yepp. Five stars and order of G3 rock after hitting Submit-button..

Sixth star, when/if i find a way to move the range of treble higher. Just to add some little sparkle i personally need.
