Description

The Meridian Exciter/Compressor is a clone of the Guyatone PS-021 Guitar Exciter / Compressor and its cousin, the PS-020 Bass Exciter / Compressor. It can be looked at as three distinct circuits chained together. First is the classic Dyna Comp, nearly a direct copy but with somewhat reduced sensitivity on the Sustain control, so its use is more as a limiter than a sustainer. The following stage is an exciter, which is very similar to a circuit from a Japanese electronics book in the 1980s (and not unlike the BBE Sonic Stomp, but with no frequency-specific control). The last stage is a Muff-style tone control that pans between a bass emphasis and treble emphasis. However, unlike the BMP?s classic mid-scoop, there is a very slight mid hump throughout the rotation.

The kit contains the parts for the guitar- AND bass version!

This kit contains the PCB and all necessary parts. The enclosure can be selected, please select 4 knobs for 6,3mm shaft separately.

5 from 5 Very cool effect for clean tone , compression and harmonics , respect of the tone , you cant remove it ...

- C 14 is too large in size , to fit between the other caps ... need a smaller one ...

- Change IC2 , IC3 , IC4 for OPA2134 , change Q1 and Q6 ( buffer ) for MPSA18 ...

- Change R31 for 68K if you want less output volume ...

- Power supply mods : change R38 and R39 for 4,7K ( 33K is too much for a stable bias ... )
and you can twice the value of caps : C19 , C20 , C21 ...

5 from 5 Essential tool

Today I read on two famous stompboxes forum that Many did not realize that PS-021 Guitar Exciter
was one of the most versatile and unique pedals of the mid-80s.

I am sure it is...

This circuit is rarely powered off, since the day I built it, in april 2020.
On my build, I tried both bass and guitar versions. I finally settled on the bass version, and I am using it everywhere with guitars, bass, synth and a drum machine.

I could compare it with some expensive compressors and this one is something else.
The ability to control even and odd harmonics gives more precision and definition to your sound, more clarity to the playing or more of its own character.

With a bass, the Colour control is very helpful and powerful, like a frequency calibration, setting the texture and the amount of bass.
I like to use it on a drum machine, to give more depth and more bass in the bass drums.
You can increase the attack with the sustain control, but not as far as some other compressor would. That is why I add an other compressor, like the Engineer Thumb, before it.

It makes every other circuits sound better, before or after, like a taylored EQ.

A corner stone, usefull in many ways.
