Description

The Sun Beta Lead combines the lead and bass version in one pedal, switchable by toggle switch. If you need nasty and gritty stoner grunge sludgy doom sounds, that´s the pedal.

The kit is containing the most currant pcb version, which is working.

This kit contains the PCB and all necessary parts. The enclosure can be selected, please select 5 knobs, up to 22mm diameter, for 6,3mm shaft separately.

This project is by PCB Guitar Mania, in collaboration with Musikding. If you have any problems with the contents of the kit, please contact Das Musikding (Klaus). For technical problems please contact PCB Guitar Mania: PCB Guitar Mania support.

3 from 5 Kinda good sound, but build document is not the good one

The kit is perfectly prepared, everything was inside. In itself, the building is not so hard, but not really easy because of the really tight fit in the BB enclosure. The most problematic part was that following the building document linked with the kit, the pedal will not work. The version of this document is not the good one and I would advise two things prior to build the pedal when you receive the kit:

* check the version of the board. I received the v1.0 and in this version, the pcb requires some modifications that you can find here https://pcbguitarmania.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Sun-Beta-Lead-Building-Docs14.pdf
* be sure to check the good build document:
- v1.0: https://pcbguitarmania.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Sun-Beta-Lead-Building-Docs14.pdf
- v1.3: https://pcbguitarmania.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Sun-Beta-Lead-1v3-Building-Docs.pdf

If you have the v1.0 and you dont do the modifications, youll have the following symptoms: the LT1054 is overheating and youll measure a voltage drop as soon as you connect the CD4069.

Otherwise, the sound is nice, huge fuzzy/distortion from this preamp!

4 from 5 Lovely pedal, difficult build

The good: this pedal is one of my favorites. VERY powerful (I actually plugged it straight into my 2x15 sunn bass cab for fun, and it put out tones (faintly)), so it will slam tube amps, no doubt. I seldom have to go above 10:00 on the volume knob. The tone stack is one of the best I have heard in a pedal--very versatile and very clear, as each knob makes a big difference in the sound. In the clean range, the pedal really brings out the character of the guitar and pickups. Breakup starts around 10:00 of the gain pedal, and goes from light gritty overdrive to super saturated all-out distortion. I ended up making a working pedal with TL072 ICs. The switch from Lead to Bass is a very nice and versatile addition (especially from someone who switches from bass to guitar) and the bass distortion is very very nice.

The not-so good: The first-generation boards from PCB Guitar Mania require some funky workarounds, which ended up sucking up a lot of my attention and frustration when troubleshooting. I thought it was something in my assembly skills when the pedal refused to work, but actually, I had... faulty ICs. Klaus made it right and updated the assembly docs, but overall I have to say the build was a bit frustrating. I think its a bit shoddy to sell boards with known errors and its made me think twice about ordering PCBGM kits, even though I really enjoy their selection and taste.
