Description

The Range is a treblebooster based on the legendary Dallas Rangemaster. It has the same features but some addons. It works with a germanium PNP transistor and uses a toggle-switch to switch between different input capacitors which makes it more versatile. It also features negative ground, so you can use the power-supply you use for your ofter effects.

This kit contains all parts you need to build a fully functional effect pedal.

Not included in the kit, but also very good to have:

Aluminium enclosure: select one above.
9V battery or DC power supply
1 nice knob for the potentiometer, for 6.3mm shaft
Decal, transfer or transparent sheets for labeling

Very easy to build, does the job

You can build it in a couple of hours. I recommend to use a signal generator and an osciloscope to adjust the transistor polarization. Using the standard values gave a very asymmetrical signal, but it is expected with a very small feedback design. However, some may like the asymmetrical signal sound.
Just try it and see what you like.

MY FIRST BUILD.

The range v2 kit has all top quality parts ,even the germanium transistor is graded to suit the kit. As this is my first kit i am taking my time so have not completed it yet. being new i have contacted musikding a few times with questions which they answered very quickly,they are super helpful and for that i am very grateful.I will update my review when i have completed my kit. if you have soldering skills you should have no problem with this kit. My first kit!

Ive chosen this one for my first kit, because its pretty straight forward (the only thing was I couldnt quite figure out where to put the transistor socket, since there were two options, maybe you can make it more clear in the docs). The sound is very good, I love the flexibility you get with having three selectable Eqs via the toggle switch. A very nice kit!

The Range Boost.

Recently bought this treble boost just to try it and Wow,
Originally owned a Rangemaster which I bought in 1967 and sadly was stolen from our truck in 69. When I went to replace it the company had gone and I was unable to find another as good until now.I have tried many treble boosts over the years and never quite satisfied, kept comparing them to that original Rangemaster but when I put this kit together I wasnt sure what to expect but the minute I connected it and tested, I went Wow, my rangemaster is back and somebodys improved on it. Thanks very much guys for this kit and making a ageing guitarist very happy indeed, and the price, incredible.

the range

Bonjour,
Après de multiples recherche sur le range master , je me suis décidé sur ce kit .
je suis agréable surpris par le son et je ne peux plus men passer ,à tel point que quand je désactive la pédale RANGE tout est plus fade ...( stratoscaster avec micros texas special )
a placer en tête de votre chaine de pedales juste apres laccordeur et avant les distos et overdrive .
( pour ma part la range est devant un overdrive MOJO JOJO Tc electronics )
les saturations sont magnifique et le grain sur les solos est unique .
je possede un hoTrod deluxe FENDER 2008 , modifié avec Hp alnico Jensen p12n , le rendu est dun trés haut niveau .
jutilise mon pédale board uniquement sur le clean en V1 , le canal saturé est moche moche... même avec une lampe plus typé rock 12ax7 mesa boogie spax7 ca change pas grand chose ...
une belle pioche ce RANGE et le prix est top ( livré avec tansitor AC125 )
je vais monter prochaiement le kit MAY ...

This treble booster is a MUST HAVE!!!

The new PCB is far better than the previous (I built both) but the switchs PCB doesnt fit exactely the LED hole.
Hole for the LED must be drilled vertically in line with the switch hole.
Anyway, this RANGE is fantastic; also the cap choice for imput cap is good.
As long as you socket the Transistors, you can experiment with other good candidates.
Easy to build (took me less than 30 minutes), a little bit noisy but not too much.
Worth to be in your pedalboard if you play classic rock, blues rock, or so.

A few easily solved problems

Sounds great, my first kit / first time soldering on a PCB.
One capacitor was missing, but another one was sent promptly.
I had the top mount enclosure, and i think the hole for the switch was made in a slightly wonky spot, so the LED
was awkward to fit, and the wires were too short to go to the output jack.
To solve this is just soldered on another piece of wire to reach the jack.
Also took me a while to get the documentation, but once i started everything became clear.

All in all a pleasant experience, for a great sound.

Simple et efficace

Super pédale, très simple à assembler. Je lutilise avec ma tele dans un orange rocker 15, le son est vraiment excellent. En clean la dynamique est vraiment bonne, le son est plus vivant. En disto ça perce, presque comme du hors phase sur le mode treble.
Je pense quelle va rester constamment allumée sur mon pedalboard, foncez! :)

Superb Rangemaster Plus Clone

I have bought two of these kits from Das Musikding. One for myself as I wished to experience a germanium transistor based treble booster, and the other for a friend. Prior to this, I bought Der May T.B. which I use with my lefthand Brian May Red Special through a Line 6 HD500X running Vox AC30 models. Der May is mounted on my guitar strap, then into my Line 6 Relay radio pack. The sound is astonishing using pre-decimal English sixpences as picks (or plectrums as we call them here in Ireland). Anyway, The Range is a superb kit, easy to build and assemble. Always buy the pre-drilled enclosure. I made the mistake of buying a blank for my first attempt. Even with a drill press, I messed it up. There are three filter options available via the switch. Treble, which is very VERY trebly, treble and mid which is more pleasing to my ears, then full-range but still with the same amount of treble. This last setting is, to my ears, possibly the modification Tony Iommi requested for his original Rangemaster. It also works extremely well with my Red Special and comes uncannily close to Mays 1970s live sound. Rich, vocal and transparent. (Der May is a Greg Fryer Touring/Deluxe clone in my estimation, giving a more modern version of the May sound). I would recommend The Range to anyone looking to bring a dull, dark sounding amplifier to life. Connect it to a practice amp and all hell breaks loose. The Rangemaster was used by Rory Gallagher, Brian May, Tony Iommi, Richie Blackmore, Eric Clapton (Bluesbreakers/Beano album) and countless other unsung heroes. Analyse their sounds, and you will quickly realise why you need to buy this kit asap. The component labelling is helpful above and beyond the call of duty. Pre-stripped wires, everything is done with meticulous care and attention to detail. Typical Das Musikding :-). I cant recommend it highly enough.
