Description

The GCI Brutalist Jr. is a distortion pedal which can be built with the business card/pcb of Kurt Ballou from the Godcity Studio. It is a full grown distortion featuring controls for distortion, loudness and volume.

Knobs for the pots are not included in the kit, you can select them yourself. The pots have round 6.3mm shafts.

Neat stuff! If you lucky enough to get a Kurt Ballou business card PCB before Its sold out in days at the Godcity webstore, or even luckier to get one when you meet Kurt in person at a Converge show, you can build a great distortion pedal with this stuff! Building document is really clear and contains every step, even mods and drill template if needed! kurtballou.com

Broootal

I had a blast building this pedal. Everything labeled and the instructions were clear. It sounds absolutely broootal! OK, I did mess the circuit the first time. I soldered the IC sockets wrong and broke it while trying to desolder. Luckily I have a spare, fixed it and did not make any further damage.

Brutal and easy to assemble

Ive ordered the kit with the pre-drilled enclosure, and everything went well. The PCB is well-designed and the whole process is pretty simple. The instructions provided are very detailed which makes this a suitable project for beginners. LED placement is a little unorthodox but other than that it took me like a couple hours going real slow, and zero troubleshooting necessary.

There were a couple of 1u caps missing from the kit but fortunately I had leftovers from another project.

As for the sound, this pedal works best with an already overdriven amp. It can get pretty nasty and gets you a mid-bumped dirty distortion. The loudness knob makes it sound a little muffled or bright and agressive. At higher gain settings it hisses and feedbacks quite easily, but based on Converges music Im guessing thats a feature, not a bug. As a standalone OD I wasnt very impressed but then again, thats not really what its made for.
