Description

The Comet Distortion project is a clone of the classic orange DS-1 Distortion. It?s got a few things going on in the circuit?the pregain and tone sections are very similar to the Big Muff, while the diode-to-ground hard clipping is similar to circuits like the Distortion+.

This kit contains the PCB and all necessary parts. The enclosure can be selected, please select 3 knobs for 6,3mm shaft separately.

Better than the original

I chose to go with Mod 1 + Mod 2, and I didnt do the BM mod (yet).

This kit allows to build a pre-94 or a post-94 variant. I chose the modern version with a RC4558 op-amp. I might reconsider just out of curiosity...

The kit came with a TL72, Ill need to order a TA7136P, to try the vintage op-amp.

According to instructions, I used two BAT 41 and two 1N914 to replace the original 1S2473 diodes from the Made in Japan version. Two 3mm Led for the alternative clipping option. Both clipping options sound great.

I like the versatility of the circuit and the many options suggested in the instructions (op-amp, diodes, components values...) which allows to explore the possibilities of this classic distortion.

I had some pre-conceived opinion about DS-1 (no character, cold and artificial sound, boring...). It is actually quite the opposite. I was really wrong !
