Description

The Scrambler is a heavy fuzz, with a mixable higher octave. Nevertheless it is very open and articulate and reacts sensitively to the touch.

Texture controls the amount of octave, Balance controls the mixing of the effect to the clean sound. The original pedal often was too quiet, so there is a boost stage at the output to adjust the volume.

This kit contains all parts you need to build a fully functional effect pedal. Also very useful:

Not included in the kit, but also good to have:

  • Aluminium enclosure: select one from the top
  • 9V battery or DC power supply
  • 3 nice knobs for the pots, for 6,3mm shafts
  • Decal, transfer or transparent sheets for labeling

Instrument: Guitar Bass
Effect-Type: Fuzz Octave

4 from 5 Kit is great, sound is ok

Klaus kits are getting better and better. The PCB Layout is well thought through and together with the 3PDT switch PCB it helps to avoid unnecessary and long cabling which helps to reduce noise. I really liked the kit. The sound is ok but I was looking for a more extreme kind of Fuzz, something like Jack White is using in Another way to die. This isnt the one but dont misunderstand me, it still does what a Fuzz is supposed to do.

4 from 5 A decent clone of the Scrambler

The sound is there but I think there isnt enough gain. Even at full blast it lacks the skronkiness and sustain of the original and the octave is a bit weak compared to other Scrambler clones. It might sound better with hot single coils.

As with the original, the Balance knob is pretty useless since turning it down makes the pedal quieter as well. The Texture knob doesnt have a lot of range but its effective at turning down the octave. I like that it doesnt change the level.
The Volume knob has a ridiculous amount of level - unity is at 10 oclock. This is great because it can push an amp into overdrive if needed.
The internal bias trimpot allows you to go from tight to gated fuzz. I think it would be better to set Balance with a trimpot and forget it, then use an external Bias knob to tweak the sound on the fly - an easy enough mod.

The BOM is missing D6 and a couple of resistors but they are visible in the schematics and the parts were included in the kit.
This was my first build from a kit. Not the easiest build for a beginner because of the high part count and tight space on the PCB but I managed pretty well.
Wiring the PCB to the footswitch proved to be impossible from below - you either do it before positioning the PCB inside the enclosure or you do it from the top, which is very tight. All the parts and holes are very small.

Anyway it worked right away so Im happy to add another flavor to my sounds.
